Alan Nicholson is a horse breeder and horse racer and has been involved in New Zealand harness racing for 50 years. He joined the Royal New Zealand navy in his teens and served for two decades as a communications specialist, a diver and diving supervisor. For he next 20 years he worked in law enforcement.

He has served on various committees specializing in promotions and publicity and has been involved in radio and television work. He was also a rugby player and has successfully coached rugby teams.
